Makhaza police station remains a pipe dream

It’s anyone’s guess when police officers in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape will get the added support they so desperately need.

This follows the failed commitment by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola that construction would begin on a temporary police station on the first of November.

Now it’s turned out that the successful bidder has been unable to do the job.

So, it’s back to the drawing board as they repeat the bidding process.

The provincial community policing forum says government must act fast as crime waits for no one.

“Makhaza, Harare, Lingelethu, and Site B, those are the areas that are mostly hit by crime and violent crimes and there is a reason, as evident from the stats, that there’s a need for a police station,” said the CPF chairperson Francina Lucas.

“I think if there were any delays or any problems. I think that should have been communicated to the community so that the community is aware.”

Police say they have now re-advertised the bidding processes.

“The SAPS confirms that a mobile police station resourced with members and vehicles has been erected in the Makhaza area pending a tender process that is currently underway,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

“Apart from these interventions, we will be engaging with Makhaza various stakeholders this coming week to explain the technical delays that have prevented the commencement of this process.”
