Almenara – You Don’t Play Finals You Win Them

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Sergio Almenara aims to deliver their first silverware of the season.

Buccaneers last won a trophy in 2020 when they won MTN8 under German coach Josef Zinnebeur and their first-ever final in the competition was in 1972.

Almenara who was appointed alongside Jose Riveiro wants to bring glory days back at Pirates by winning this trophy. The Spaniard hopes to deliver MTN8 title number four as he said finals ain’t played but they are won.

“The preparations have been really good this week, the intensity in the training, the tempo, the speed has been high in offensive and defensive,” he told the club’s media department.

“We are happy with the performance of the team during the week so we are more than ready.

“The final between the two teams, they did very well to get here. So it’s a 50/50 final. I think both teams are coming here to win the final not to play it.

“You don’t play finals you win them.”

Pirates’ road to the final wasn’t an easy one as they first faced Royal AM in Durban and managed to progress with a 2-1 win and things didn’t get easier as they were drawn with champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.

But the Soweto giants proved too strong for the Tshwane giants as they thrashed them by 3-0 in Polokwane last month after playing a goalless draw in the first leg at Orlando Stadium.
