Switzerland sweat on injured Sommer

Switzerland national team goalkeeper Yann Sommer is in a race against time to be fit for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The 33-year-old sustained an ankle injury during German Bundesliga action for Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sommer suffered the injury on October 18 with just 13 minutes played into Gladbach’s 2-1 away loss to Darmstadt in their 2022/2023 DFB Cup second-round fixture.

Switzerland is in Group G at the FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn against Serbia, Cameroon and record five-time World champions Brazil.

Sommer is also the subject of interest from Manchester United, who is reported chasing his signature in the coming winter transfer window.

Meanwhile, midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is back home and training with FC Lugano after wrapping up his US MLS season in early October at Chicago Fire.

The Swiss number one has 76 caps.

Lugano confirmed on their official website that the 31-year-old former Liverpool player was their guest to help with his match fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

“We are very grateful to FC Lugano, and Chicago Fire Football Club for this opportunity,” Swiss Football Association Technical Director Pierluigi Tami told FC Lugano media.

“When the clubs offer support to the federation and our national team, it is a nice gesture for Swiss football as a whole.

Switzerland will open their Group G campaign on November 24 against Cameroon.

And Switzerland will warm up for the FIFA World Cup with a friendly date against fellow finalists Ghana on November 17 in Abu Dhabi.

Switzerland will be making their 12th FIFA World Cup appearance when kicks off in Qatar on November 20 and ends on December 18.

They have reached the FIFA World Cup round of 16 in their last two appearances.

However, the Swiss have not reached the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals since 1954.
