Maritzburg To Make Maduka Decision This Week

Maritzburg United coach John Maduka will find out about his future this week, as the club has called a meeting on Wednesday after a poor string of results.

According to club chairman Farook Kadodia, the club’s leadership will have showdown talks with the coach on Wednesday to decide whether to fire him or not.

The meeting is necessitated, as the club is currently at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table with 11 points after 13 matches.

“Let me talk to you on Wednesday and I can tell you exactly if there’s anything we are doing or changes whatsoever and I will tell you on Wednesday,” said Kadodia.

When pressed if the future of Maduka looks good or not with the meeting on Wednesday, Kadodia was non-committal in his response, only saying: “What we are going through right now, we will overcome it.

“But we’ll tell you exactly what is the future of the technical team, whether they are staying or not staying, whatever on Wednesday.”

Maduka was appointed as Maritzburg coach in June after jumping ship from Royal AM, who he led to third place last term in the DStv Premiership.

It was always going to be a tough job for Maduka, as Maritzburg had finished 12th last term under Ernst Middendorp.

The club sacked Middendorp in June, with the statement saying they were not happy with the direction they were taking under the former Kaizer Chiefs coach. A source at the club said he was not over the horror miss of winning the league title with Chiefs at the end of the 2019/20 season.

They then turned to Maduka, who Kadodia said at his unveiling in June that he admired his work even when he was in charge of Bloemfontein Celtic. Kadodia handed Maduka a two-year deal with one year option to renew.

But things have not gone well for the Team of Choice under the former Malawi captain. They are propping the foot of the table, after losing to provincial rivals Golden Arrows 2-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.

That loss came on the heels of a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns at the same venue on Tuesday. Overall, they have now lost three, drawn three of their last six matches now.

The club last won a match when they shocked Orlando Pirates 1-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium in September. All their wins this season have come from home, with another against Chippa United in August.
