Chiefs coach Zwane: We made Pirates look ordinary

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane says his troops executed the plan so well that they made Orlando Pirates look ordinary in a Soweto derby encounter at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Amakhosi beat Pirates 1-0, thanks to a breathtaking goal by Yusuf  Maart from the centre line, handing Zwane his first victory in the Soweto derby as a coach.

CHIEFS OUTPLAYED PIRATES

Zwane believes Chiefs were the better team on the day and deserved to win as they outplayed Pirates in all departments.

Pirates in form players such as Mmonapule Saleng and Kermit Erasmus were nowhere to be found in the game as the Chiefs defence stood resolute and followed Zwane’s instructions to the T.

“We knew that going into halftime, we had them. They had no space to breathe, and you could see that they were now doubting themselves.

“So we had to wait for them to make any change and react from there because we needed to see what they wanted to do and counter that.

“But at the same time, also make a change that will make them panic,” Zwane told the media.

“We had them in the first time, we were just unfortunate not to score. We were supposed to go to the break leading 2-1 or 2-0.

WANTED TO WIN THE GAME

“When you look at the way the boys played and Pirates, they really wanted to win the game, and they are doing very well.

“But if you can suffocate a team of Pirates’ calibre with so much quality on the field and make them look ordinary on the day, tells you the plan was well executed.

“We needed to ensure that we keep it simple and don’t put the guys under pressure because we were on top of them.

“We took the game to them after a slow start again in the second half, and we had them.

“That’s why against the run of play, we managed to get the goal from Maart, and from there, you could see that we could get a second goal any time.”
