The US Embassy & Consulates in South Africa has warned of a possible terrorist attack in Sandton, Gauteng.

Issuing a statement, the US government claims to have received information that a planned terrorist attack targeting large gatherings of people is high.

While there is no further information regarding the timing, method or target of the potential attack, the US says it will likely occur on Saturday, 29 October.“The U.S. government has received information that terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg, South Africa, on 29 October 2022.

There is no further information regarding the timing, method, or target of the potential attack.

The U.S. Embassy has advised staff to avoid crowds of people and other large public gatherings in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg during the weekend of 29-30 October 2022.”

In response, the South African government said it noted the warning of a possible terrorist attack in Sandton.“It is the responsibility of the South African security forces to ensure that all people within our country feel safe. We are working hard at keeping our nation and her people safe.”

Meanwhile, Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele said there is no evidence to support the warning.“I have checked this with my security unit and we are a bit disturbed. This alarm has been going on but up to this point it is not backed up by any evidence.”

Gungubele oversees state security, after the scrapping of the intelligence ministry last year.

Government said it would urgently inform South Africans of immediate threats, should the need arise.
