The name of the game, which combines the two sports but is more closely related to golf, is a portmanteau of the words “football” and “golf.”

A mixture of professional football players from the Netherlands and Belgium participated in the world’s first footgolf competition, which was organized in the Netherlands by Michael Jansen and Bas Korsten.

Following this, several nations started to plan games, activities, competitions, and even national leagues and associations around this sport.

Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Norman Mphake – President of Footgolf SA about the rise of Footgolf both around the world and particularly in South Africa.

“Footgolf is a hybrid sport, it is a new sport within the South African space, it is a new sport globally. it was actually established in 2009 in the Netherlands, we are currently the first African country in the African continent who are part of the international federation.

“Footgolf is exactly what it sounds like, we play footgolf with our feet, it is the combination of the sport of the prestigious sport of golf and the popular sport of football. “

“We play on a normal golf ground using the same rules, the only difference is that we use a size 5 soccer ball. Holes are far away from the greens and they are bigger, we follow the same sequence as golf, and it is exactly mirrored against golf,” says Mphake.
