The three-nation matches, planned for Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, could be played during the international week of 14-20 November.
After completing a successful international week in September, beating Sierra Leone 4-0 and Botswana 1-0, Bafana head coach Hugo Broos gave an indication that they would continue to play against nations that will test the team but also not strong in the mould of France, who hammered Bafana 5-0 earlier this year in an international friendly match.
Initially, SAFA had been talking to Uzbekistan and Burkina Faso for the international friendly matches for November, and both games were possibly going to be played in Dubai. But the negotiations for the two games broke down, leading to different options being explored.
There was also an invitation from Algeria. SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe confirmed last week that South Africa was invited to the opening of the Baraki Stadium in Algeria to host the inaugural fixture in a special event for the North African nation.
In what will be the first stadium in Algeria without an athletics track surrounding the actual pitch, it’s promised to be one of the most iconic arenas on the continent with an atmosphere second to none. The Algerian
Football Federation (AFF) made contact with the South African Football Association (SAFA) earlier this month before provisional talks began last week over the potential encounter.
Algeria had been looking for a high-profile opponent in Africa, that would not be going to the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicking off next month. And it’s believed that they saw Bafana as that opponent.
But with Broos looking to make full use of the short international break, and wanting to play at least two matches, the Angola and Mozambique matches were seen as the ideal programme with also less travelling arrangements.
