AmaZulu are through to the 2022 MTN8 final by the away goal rule as they played out to a goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium Sunday.
The first leg initially ended 1-1 earlier this month in Soweto.
The return leg in Durban started slowly with the first half ending deadlocked at nil all. Both teams were not active in the final third and they couldn’t convert their chances.
Chiefs were the first to attack for goal in the seventh minute, however Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana’s headed effort was cleared away.
Seconds later Ashley Du Preez’s effort didn’t trouble AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa as it went over the bar.
AmaZulu’s first real chance to score came 24 minutes into the encounter. George Maluleka’s shot was well dealt with by an alert Brandon Peterson.
Five minutes before the break, Caleb had an opportunity to put Amakhosi in front, but he mis-kicked the ball.
Like in the first half, the second half was less in action. The two teams failed to create clearcut opportunities.
Chiefs bowing out of the competition piles more pressure on coach Arthur Zwane. Results wise, the Soweto giants are not doing well. They are fifth in the DStv Premiership log standings.
Usuthu will therefore meet Orlando Pirates in the final on 05 November at Moses Mabhida Stadium just before the FIFA World Cup break.
Pirates humiliated MTN8 current holders Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 in the second leg on Saturday afternoon in Polokwane.
Further details about the final showdown in Durban will be released in due course.
