DStv Premiership teams Royal AM and Marumo Gallants advanced to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday afternoon.
ZESCO United v Royal AM
The KZN outfit knocked Zambia side ZESCO United out of the competition away from home at Mwanawasa Stadium.
The teams played out to a 1-1 draw in the second preliminary round, second leg. The first leg had initially ended 0-0 in Durban last week.
There was little action in the first half, as both teams were not active in the final third, and attackers couldn’t convert their opportunities. Collins Sikombe scored the only goal of the first half, breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute.
Royal AM came alive in the second half. It was game on 56 minutes into the game after former Swallows striker Ruzaigh Gamildien levelled matters with a brilliant goal from a free kick.
ZESCO’s Kelvin Kampambas tried to score from long range on two occasions. His first strike went over the bar, the second one was well dealt with, but Thwihli Thwahla goalkeeper Xolani Ngcobo.
ZESCO’s failure to make it to the group stages of the competition caused the club’s supporters to cause an uproar on social media. The club’s faithful slammed the coach and the players for poor performance in the field of play.
MARUMO GALLANTS vs ELGECO PLUS FC
In another CAF Confederations Cup, Marumo Gallants also advanced to the next stage of the competition.
The Polokwane side defeated Elgeco Plus FC of Madagascar 1-0. Lehlohonolo Nonyane scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute. On aggregate, the DStv Premiership outfit won 4-1
