Former Moroka Swallows player Rafique Hassim is relishing his new role as Columbus Rapids coach.

Hassim, who left South Africa for Australia in 2019, has opened up on his coaching gig. He will be in charge of the men’s and women’s teams, a challenge he describes as an exciting new venture.

Hassim also outlined his objectives and expectations. The club hasn’t been doing well for some time, and Hassim aims to ensure the team improves and returns to the top.

“It’s great to take up a new challenge; I’m excited about the opportunity. It’s a fairly new club,” Hassim told FARPost.

“I’m excited to bring in some new players and give them the platform and opportunity even for the existing ones.

“It’s just making sure the club does well compared to last year and [to] put the name where it’s supposed to be, get there and compete. We need to put the club in a favourable position.”

Hassim, who previously worked as a fitness and conditioning coach for Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers, further revealed his wish to return to South Africa one day and coach in the PSL.

“Home will always be a place for me; I’m away from home doing what I can. I would love to come back home when the time is right.

“I will find the right club, and I would love to plug in, in one of the PSL teams, be a conditioning coach or an assistant coach.”

The 45-year-old, who also had a stint with Wits University, further revealed that he might feature for the team during the season.

“I will see how it goes. Football is part of me. I don’t have the speed anymore, but the enjoyment is still there. It [football] brings people together,” Hassim concluded.
