Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove’s former team in Mozambique is closing on the elite Mocambola league championship.

UD Songo, the club Dove joined Chiefs from, have opened a yawning 11-point gap over their closest pursuers Black Bulls FC and former champions Costa do Sol at the summit of the log table.

The league leaders eased past bottom-placed LD Maputo FC 3-0 on Tuesday to extend their cushion.

However, Dove’s former teammate John Banda insists the Mozambique league title is open despite his club’s obvious advantage.

Banda, who captains the side, told FARPost that the Tete-based club is wary of the threat holders Black Bulls FC and former champions Costa do Sol pose in the run-in.

“Our biggest challengers are Black Bulls and Costa do Sol, so we need to maintain the belief that we have so far,” he said.

The defending midfielder said they need to work harder in the remaining eight games.

“We are pushing…so far we have not lost a game. We need to collect some more points in the remaining games,” he added.

Dove’s former side are the only unbeaten team among the 12 teams in the league and look certain to compete in the CAF Champions League next month.

The powermen have amassed 36 points from 14 games, scored 23 goals and their defence breached just twice.

Songo have 36 points, in front of second-placed Black Bulls who have 25 points at par with third-positioned Costa do Sol.

Black Bulls are fighting for domestic honours after being booted out of the CAF Champions League preliminary round by Angolan champions Petro de Luanda.

Further down the table, Ferroviario de Beira are in seventh place with 16 points from 12 games.

Former Baroka Zambian coach Wedson Nyirenda is in charge of Ferroviario de Beira who are also excelling in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Beira-based club progressed from the preliminary round and are now competing in the first round of the second-tier continental competition.

LD Maputo anchor the table with just seven points from 14 matches played.
