Mamelodi Sundowns are the highest-ranked South African club in the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics) ranking.

Masandawana find themselves in 87th position in the IFFHS Club World Ranking, which takes games between 1 October 2021 and 30 September 2022 into consideration.

The ranking is based on results in domestic leagues, domestic cups and continental competitions over the last 12 months, with clubs being rated based on the strength of their leagues. The UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores yield more points than the UEFA Europa League and the Copa Sudamericana, while the point assignment is even lower for competition by CAF, AFC, CONCACAF and OFC.

Sundowns are the fifth-highest ranked African team after their five successive league titles and the domestic treble in 2021/22. The DStv Premiership winners have collected 132.5 points in the IFFHS Ranking, which makes them appear ahead of Bundesliga giants, Borussia Dortmund and just behind Premier league side Tottenham Hotspur.

However, they are still far off Africa’s highest-ranked team, Al Ahly, who sit in 21st position worldwide with 196 points.

Brazilian giants Palmeiras sit at the top of the ranking after lifting the Copa Libertadores in November 2021. They are followed by rivals Flamengo in second place, while UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid complete the top three.

Meanwhile, Wydad Athletic Club and Zamalek complete the top three highest ranked teams from Africa.

Further down the ranking sit Pirates in 143rd position after their run to the CAF Confederations Cup final, while appear AmaZulu also make the list after their initial CAF Champions League campaign in 298th position.
