Jamie Webber: Sundowns have made the title race look easy

SuperSport United midfielder Jamie Webber believes defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns have made the league title race easy, thanks to their indifferent start.

He is convinced the DStv Premiership is open for any team to clinch it this season. Sundowns have won six in nine league matches, drew one, and suffered two defeats. The gap between number one and number five is only two points.

TIGHT CONTEST

“I think this season because Sundowns didn’t start well, I feel like this season the league is open. They are a good team with good players, but we beat them. I feel like if we can do it, anybody else can do it; that means the league will be open,” said Webber.

“They came out with a draw against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8. It shows you can get points against Sundowns. It’s possible.

“Maybe Sundowns made it look easy last season, but our league is generally very difficult. One loss can put you in the bottom half of the table, then one win the following week put you in the top three. The league is always tight.”

Webber further revealed that this season they are competing for the league. The last time the Tshwane outfit lifted the league title was back in the 2009/10 season when it was called the ABSA Premiership.

“I feel like we are doing well; if we continue playing the way we played [in recent matches], I feel like we can make it become a reality [winning the league]. We have to take it one game at a time, and we have to be consistent.

WOUNDED STELLENBOSCH

“Gavin [Hunt], since the first day he came here, said, “I might not be the best coach, but I can teach you how to win”. With that said, this means we want to win things; he wants to win things. Once it rubs off on us, I think we’ll be a very good side,” Webber added.

Matsatsantsa will be in action on Tuesday, 18th October, when they take on a wounded lion Stellenbosch FC.

SuperSport will be aiming to make it three wins in a row, whilst The Stellies eye a return to winning ways following a 3-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday.

Kickoff at Danie Craven Stadium is at 5pm.
