South African Under-20 coach Vela Khumalo has outlined his long term goal for the squad.

Khumalo wants Amajita to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that will be held in Egypt.

Therefore, he views the COSAFA Cup qualifiers as preparations for the African elite football tournament. The competition will give Khumalo more incite about the players that deserve to be at the national team.

“We need to get past this hurdle [at the COSAFA Qualifier Tournament] and qualify for the AFCON in Egypt next year,” Khumalo told SAFA’s media

“Then I will be happy, it is the plan.

“And it will help us forget about all the challenges we had to face.

“One will say ‘let us soldier on’, it is the name of the game and we know how these things work.”

Khumalo further revealed that he is happy with the squad he assembled ahead of the COSAFA tournament, despite not having all the players he wanted in camp.

“One can say it has been hectic in the camp.

“It was a bit short notice and one can understand that some of the players we wanted were not released by the clubs.

“But we are not complaining and we will make do with what we have,” Khumalo added.

The COSAFA Under-20 tournament will be held in Eswatini from October 7-16. Amajita’s first match of the tournament will be against Malawi on Saturday, October 8th.

Amajita will be aiming to get back to winning ways against Malawi. They were humiliated 6-1 last time out by Angola when Helman Mkhalele was still in charge of the squad.
