Vilakazi – Why I Didn’t Like The FIFA Break

Golden Arrows co-coach Vusi Vilakazi says the international break came at the wrong time for his side as it stopped their positive momentum.

Arrows host Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership at Princess Magogo Stadium at 19:30 later today, hoping to continue where they left it off before the International break.

Arrows headed into the international break with a biggest victory in recent times, crushing Swallows FC 4-0 which ended the stint of coach Dylan Kerr. That victory saw Arrows soar to fifth on the log table with 11 points after eight matches.

“Obviously at this stage it disturbed our momentum,” Vilakazi told iDiski Times.

“But if we were defeated, I would have said it was going to be good for us to regroup and pay attention in certain areas of our game.

“But we did play some friendly games to try and maintain the level of fitness because we don’t want it to drop because when you come back, you start from scratch again. So we didn’t want to see that happen.”

Arrows started the season on a poor note, losing the first two matches of the campaign to drop to bottom of the table and Vilakazi plus co-coach Mabhuti Khenyeza were the favourites to suffer the chop, but they have collected three wins in their last five matches to turn things around.

Vilakazi says to lose those matches came as a surprise but they knew that it was just a matter of time before they got going.

“We had a nice and prepared season, even our friendly games that we played during the pre-season we won all of them,” said Vilakazi.

“Sekhukhune, they were here, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) were here and we were beating them. Even though losing those [first] two matches was a surprise, I think it was a wake-up call not to think we have arrived but we still need to work hard.

“But we knew that it was just a matter of time [until] the team’s fortunes changed because even the games that we lost, it is the only one that I can highlight that we didn’t play well at all and that was against Richards Bay [first game of the season]’

“The Sekhukhune match, they stole the points from us because we had plenty of chances and we were supposed to win by four goals.”
