Sundowns reclaim Premiership summit after beating Durban City

Mamelodi Sundowns have reclaimed the top spot in the Betway Premiership after recording a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City on Saturday night.

The Brazilians responded emphatically after Orlando Pirates had temporarily climbed to the summit earlier in the day, ensuring that the Buccaneers did not enjoy their stay at the top for long.

About five hours earlier, Pirates had moved into first place after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over their traditional rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, in the 187th edition of the historic Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

However, Sundowns produced a dominant display against Durban City, collecting maximum points and restoring their position at the summit.

Thabang Matuludi opened the scoring in the 34th minute before completing his brace in the 66th minute. Ingraam Rayners then added his name to the scoresheet in the 76th minute to give Masandawana a commanding 3-0 lead.

Durban City pulled one back in the 86th minute through Jean Libumba, but the goal proved to be little more than a consolation. Sundowns were not finished, as Antonio van Wyk struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to complete the 4-1 victory.

The result took Sundowns to 26 points after 10 matches, leaving them one point clear of the mighty Buccaneers, who still have a game in hand.

The victory further underlined the Tshwane giants’ determination to defend their position in a tightly contested Premiership campaign, with Pirates continuing to apply pressure in the race for the championship.

For Durban City, the defeat was a disappointing outcome as they came up against a Sundowns side determined to make a statement in front of their supporters.

With both Sundowns and Pirates showing their intentions early in the campaign, the battle for Premiership supremacy promises to remain intense as the season progresses.

The Brazilians will now turn their attention to their next assignment, knowing that consistency will be crucial if they are to stay ahead of their Soweto rivals in the title race.

In the other Saturday results, AmaZulu won the KwaZulu-Natal Derby after brushing aside Golden Arrows 1-0, while Chippa United registered a 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC away from home. In Limpopo, Polokwane City were held to a goalless draw by TS Galaxy, while Kruger United used their home-ground advantage in Mpumalanga to defeat Richards Bay 3-1.
