Zwane Hails “Gritty” AmaZulu as Usuthu Grind Out 1-0 Ethekwini Derby Win
AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane praised his side’s fighting spirit after they edged Golden Arrows 1-0 in a tense Ethekwini Derby on Saturday, extending their winning run in the Betway Premiership.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s second-half strike proved decisive as Usuthu secured the three points and maintained their place in the top three. Zwane, speaking after the match, highlighted the gritty nature of the victory and the character shown by his players.
“It was about grinding out the result,” Zwane said. “We had to compete against a strong Arrows bench, and I salute my competitive soldiers for the way they fought.”
The contest at Princess Magogo Stadium lived up to its billing as a physical, tightly contested local derby. AmaZulu, who entered the match on the back of four consecutive league wins, were forced to dig deep against an Arrows side that had recently shown attacking quality.
Ngwenya struck in the 65th minute to break the deadlock. The goal capped another efficient performance from the Zimbabwean striker and gave Usuthu the cushion they needed to see out the remaining minutes.
AmaZulu successfully managed Arrows’ substitutions and late pressure, refusing to be drawn into an open game. The clean sheet and three points reflected the defensive discipline Zwane has demanded from his squad this season.
The victory marked AmaZulu’s fifth successive league win and kept them firmly in third place on the Betway Premiership table. Golden Arrows, by contrast, dropped to ninth after the defeat.
Zwane’s post-match comments focused less on individual brilliance and more on collective effort. He repeatedly credited the group’s competitiveness and willingness to grind through difficult moments — qualities that have defined Usuthu’s strong start to the campaign.
With the derby bragging rights secured and another three points banked, AmaZulu will look to maintain their momentum as the season progresses. For Zwane, the result reinforced the message he has been delivering to his players: results built on grit and collective discipline are just as valuable as free-flowing victories.
