5 Hair care habits that help reduce breakage

Healthy hair starts with good hair care habits. Whether you wear your hair natural, relaxed, braided or regularly use heat-styling tools, how you handle your hair can affect its strength and overall condition.

Hair breakage occurs when the hair shaft becomes weak and snaps. This can be caused by excessive heat, chemical treatments, tight hairstyles, rough handling and dryness. Although damaged hair cannot always be repaired, adopting a gentle hair care routine can help minimise further damage and keep your hair looking healthy.

Here are five practical habits that can help reduce hair breakage.

1. Be gentle when washing your hair

Washing your hair helps remove dirt, sweat and product build-up. However, rough handling can contribute to breakage. Use a gentle shampoo and concentrate on cleaning your scalp rather than scrubbing the lengths of your hair. When drying, avoid rubbing your hair aggressively with a towel.

Instead, gently squeeze out excess water using a soft towel or cotton T-shirt.

2. Keep your hair moisturised

Dry hair is more vulnerable to damage. Use a conditioner after shampooing to improve softness and manageability. You can also incorporate a leave-in conditioner or moisturising treatment into your routine. Pay particular attention to the ends, which are generally more prone to dryness and damage.

3. Limit heat styling

Frequent use of flat irons, curling irons and hair dryers can weaken hair strands. Reduce how often you use these tools and choose lower temperature settings when necessary. Applying a heat-protectant product before styling can also help minimise damage.

4. Detangle carefully

Rough brushing and combing can cause unnecessary tension. Use a wide-tooth comb and gently work through tangles, starting at the ends and moving towards the roots. Avoid pulling or forcing a comb through stubborn knots.

5. Avoid tight hairstyles

Tight ponytails, braids, cornrows and buns can place excessive tension on the hair and scalp. Repeated pulling may cause breakage and traction alopecia. Choose looser hairstyles and avoid extensions or braids that cause pain or discomfort.

Final thoughts

Reducing hair breakage does not require expensive products. Consistent moisturising, gentle handling, limiting heat and avoiding tight hairstyles can make a difference. Small changes to your daily routine can help protect your hair and maintain its strength.
