Orlando Pirates claimed the bragging rights in the 87th Soweto Derby after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over traditional arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi were the heroes for the Buccaneers, whose victory not only handed them derby honours but also propelled them to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
Pirates now lead the league with 25 points, two points clear of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, strengthening their position in the race for the coveted league title.
The highly anticipated encounter lived up to its billing, with the FNB Stadium sold out just six hours after tickets went on sale, underlining the enduring popularity of the historic rivalry between the two Soweto giants.
Chiefs made a promising start, putting the Pirates defence under early pressure as their forwards repeatedly threatened to find the back of the net. However, the Buccaneers weathered the early storm and gradually grew into the contest.
Pirates eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Mbuthuma found the back of the net to give the Sea Robbers the advantage.
Their celebrations were short-lived, though, as Amakhosi responded six minutes later through Pule Mmodi, who restored parity to make it 1-1.
With the stakes high and the derby honours up for grabs, both teams returned for the second half determined to gain the upper hand.
However, Pirates came out with renewed determination, and their persistence paid dividends in the 55th minute when Moremi struck to restore the Buccaneers’ lead.
The goal proved decisive as Pirates held on to their advantage to secure a memorable 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals.
For the Buccaneers, the result was more than just a derby triumph. It was a statement of intent in their pursuit of the league title, with the three points taking them to 25 points at the summit of the standings.
Chiefs, meanwhile, were left to reflect on a promising start that ultimately failed to deliver the result their passionate supporters had hoped for.
In another Betway Premiership encounter played on Saturday, Milford FC registered a valuable 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, adding another twist to the ongoing league campaign.
With Pirates now sitting comfortably at the top of the table, the pressure is mounting on their closest challengers, particularly Sundowns, who will be determined to close the two-point gap.
For now, however, the spotlight belongs to the Buccaneers, who have secured the ultimate prize in Soweto football: victory over their fiercest rivals and the bragging rights that come with it.
