Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has handed loose forward Emmanuel Tshituka a major opportunity after naming him among six uncapped players in a 37-man squad for the upcoming European leg of the Nations Championship.
Tshituka is among the new faces who have earned their first senior Springbok call-ups as Erasmus looks to strengthen his squad depth ahead of South Africa’s three November Test matches against Italy, France and Ireland.
The Sharks loose forward has previously represented South Africa A, but his inclusion in the senior national squad marks an important milestone in his career as he moves closer to making his Springbok Test debut.
He joins flyhalves Yaqeen Ahmed and Luan Giliomee, centre Markus Muller, wing Sebastian de Klerk and lock Riley Norton as the six uncapped players selected for the northern hemisphere tour.
Erasmus said the new additions had been monitored for some time and deserved their opportunities after consistently performing for their respective franchises.
“We’ve had all six players on our radar for a while now, and they’ve delivered consistently for their respective franchises in the last two seasons, so they thoroughly deserve their call-ups,” Erasmus said.
The coach added that the players had demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest franchise level, although international rugby would present a different challenge.
For Tshituka, the call-up represents an opportunity to prove himself among the country’s elite players and compete for a place in a Springbok team that continues to balance experience with emerging talent.
His selection comes as Erasmus prepares his charges for a demanding European campaign, with several established stars unavailable because of injuries.
Among those ruled out of contention are winger Cheslin Kolbe, lock Eben Etzebeth, centre André Esterhuizen and flyhalf Handré Pollard.
Their absence has opened the door for other players to stake their claims as the Springboks seek to maintain their competitiveness while building depth for future international assignments.
The squad retains a strong core of experienced internationals, including captain Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende and Malcolm Marx.
South Africa will begin their November campaign against Italy in Turin on November 7 before facing France on November 13 and Ireland on November 21.
The matches will be crucial as the Springboks seek to strengthen their position in the Nations Championship ahead of the finals weekend in London from November 27 to 29.
For Tshituka and the other newcomers, the immediate challenge will be to impress the coaching staff and turn their maiden call-ups into opportunities to wear the green and gold on the international stage.
