South Africa’s football giants Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have avoided one another in the Carling Knockout quarter-final draw, keeping alive the possibility of blockbuster clashes in the latter stages of the competition.
The draw was conducted shortly after Wednesday night’s last-16 encounter between Durban City and Stellenbosch FC at Chatsworth Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal, where the Cape Winelands outfit secured a 2-0 victory to book their place in the last eight.
The defending champions, Orlando Pirates, have been drawn against Sekhukhune United, while Kaizer Chiefs will face Siwelele FC and Mamelodi Sundowns will lock horns with Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Stellenbosch FC, meanwhile, will meet AmaZulu FC in another intriguing quarter-final encounter.
The draw has presented the country’s three biggest clubs with an opportunity to progress to the semi-finals without having to eliminate one another at this stage, although they will still need to overcome determined opponents who will be equally eager to challenge for the trophy.
Pirates will be looking to maintain their defence of the title when they take on Sekhukhune United, who will be determined to upset the reigning champions and advance to the next round.
Chiefs, who have enjoyed a strong run in the competition, will face Siwelele FC as they continue their quest for silverware. The Soweto giants will be expected to approach the encounter with ambition, but Siwelele will have their own plans as they seek to make a statement against one of the country’s most popular teams.
Sundowns, meanwhile, have been paired with Golden Arrows in what promises to be a competitive encounter. The Brazilians will be eager to progress, but Arrows have already demonstrated their attacking threat in the competition and will not be easy opponents.
Stellenbosch will also be looking to carry their momentum into the quarter-finals after producing a late show to eliminate Durban City.
The match at Chatsworth Stadium appeared destined for a goalless draw for much of the evening, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.
However, Sinoxolo Kwayiba proved to be the difference-maker, scoring in the 84th minute before completing his brace in the fourth minute of added time (90+4) to secure Stellenbosch’s 2-0 victory.
Both goals followed assists from Lateef Adejanju, whose contribution helped the Cape Winelands side seal their place among the last eight.
Durban City, who had the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters, were left disappointed after failing to find a response to Stellenbosch’s late attacking surge.
The quarter-final draw has now set up four encounters that promise plenty of drama as the remaining clubs continue their pursuit of the Carling Knockout trophy.
The Premier Soccer League will announce the dates, kick-off times and venues for the quarter-final matches in due course.
With the big three on separate sides of the draw, supporters will be watching closely to see whether the Soweto giants and the Tshwane-based champions can navigate their respective challenges and move closer to a potential showdown in the later stages of the competition.
