Morgan Mammila confirmed to iDiski Times he is “leading” Chippa United and sent a small dig at former head coach Daine Klate’s playing style.
The club’s technical director turned coach first appeared as Daine Klate’s assistant in the 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, however, after Klate was relived of his duties as head coach, Mammila continued to be on the bench for the club against AmaZulu, being named as an assistant to Siyabulela Gwambi as a head coach.
But after Mammila did all the pre- and post-match interviews as well as most of talking on the sidelines, many suspected that he is the man in charge of the Chilli Boys and he confirmed this in an exclusive interview with iDiski Times this week.
“I’m leading the team,” he responded when asked who is leading the team.
“When I came back my position was taken, so the chairman created a post for me as a technical director. You know the technical director is the link between the technical team and the board.
“So, when I came in, of course, the chairman wasn’t happy with the performance of the team and he asked me to go and help, you know, against Sundowns.
“I went there to help and after the match the following day, I was told you need to take over the team to go and play against AmaZulu, while they are looking for a coach.”
Club chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has since confirmed that Mammila and Gwambi will stay in charge and he is not looking for another coach to replace Klate, who has not officially been fired by the club.
Chippa have won both games since Klate left, with his final match being a 1-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, which saw the Chilli Boys defend deep for large parts of the game only to concede in injury-time.
While many were impressed with the defensive resilience shown by Chippa on the day, Mammila now insisted he “hates” that kind of playing style.
“The thing is I wasn’t part and parcel of the preparation,” he added. “I couldn’t change the way the coach was playing because that’s how he wanted to play. I just came to help where possible, but I couldn’t do much.
“But to be honest, I hate that type of football because chances of winning… you will only win a few matches and lose more matches with that kind of football.”
