Lula Re-elected as Brazil’s President for Historic Fourth Term
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re-elected for a historic fourth term after defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested presidential runoff on Sunday, 25 October 2026.
According to Brazil’s electoral authorities, the 80-year-old leftist leader secured 51.79% of the vote, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, winning by more than 4.4 million votes.
Lula staged a remarkable comeback after trailing Bolsonaro in the first round of voting earlier this month, becoming the first Brazilian president to win four presidential elections.
However, Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has refused to concede defeat and vowed to challenge the results following a controversial decision to extend voting hours.
Lula, who previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010 before returning to power in 2023, is expected to begin his fourth term on 5 January 2027.
