Manqoba Takes Dig At Chiefs After Cassper Collaboration

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has taken a sly dig at Kaizer Chiefs for not filling up FNB when explaining Cassper Nyovest’s recent visit at Chloorkop.

Earlier in the week Nyovest trained with Masandawana ahead of his next box fight with Priddy Ugly.

Ahead of his side’s MTN8 semi-final first leg clash with Orlando Pirates, Mngqithi was asked about Nyovest’s visit to the training ground and the Downs coach explained his side’s association with the musician because of his popularity, while seemingly taking a dig at Chiefs.

“Top player,” he said jokingly, before adding “The positive thing about Cassper is that sometimes in South Africa we are very negative, we always see the negative side of everything.

“But when you want to dig deeper and be more critical you find that there is so much positive that it brings to our society when sport, arts and culture are together in one space because Cassper has done tremendously well in his career as a musician.

“Not that now we think he’s can make a top footballer or a top boxer but there are a lot of people who like him. Our so-called big teams, what, what, what, there is so much noise that we make but we can’t fill FNB. He fills FNB!

“If a brand like that is associated with you, then it’s a very good initiative because the reason why most teams do not make as much revenue in football is because they can’t have as much people in the stadium.

“Just imagine if one top artist is going with Golden Arrows and top gospel singer who is followed by so many people he can fill the Dome is going with Marumo Gallants. The principal of association, those people say ‘we support this musician, we also support this team. When this team is playing there, we can all go to that direction.’

“How many supporters would we have in South Africa and would we still complain about teams not having sponsors when teams can command good crowds in the stadiums and make sure we can bring good numbers in the stadiums, but we’re quick to see the dark side ‘ah, but what is Cassper doing in football?’ It’s not about that sometimes.”
