Sergeant Fannie Nkosi Resigns From SAPS Amid Ongoing Criminal Cases
Suspended police Sergeant Fannie Nkosi has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS) while facing multiple criminal charges.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed on Saturday, 24 October 2026, that SAPS had received Nkosi’s resignation letter, which he submitted on Friday, 23 October.
Nkosi, who was attached to the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, resigned ahead of an internal disciplinary hearing following his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
He previously testified as Witness F at the commission, where he made allegations concerning links between senior police officials, including former Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, and alleged criminal figures such as businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Nkosi has been in custody since his arrest on 2 April 2026, following a police raid at his Pretoria North home. During the operation, officers seized several firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, official SAPS case dockets and R52,700 in cash.
He faces several charges, including theft, fraud, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of explosives and offences relating to the safekeeping of firearms and ammunition.
Nkosi is also facing a separate criminal case in Limpopo linked to a 2022 drug bust in Thohoyandou, where he allegedly impersonated a senior police officer and interfered with evidence.
After several unsuccessful bail applications, his legal team submitted representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), seeking a review of the decision to prosecute him. The matter has been postponed to 5 November 2026 for the outcome of those representations.
His resignation follows that of Sibiya earlier this month.
Although Nkosi’s resignation ends his employment with SAPS, it does not affect the criminal proceedings against him.
