Exclusive: Zinnbauer Explains Davids Reunion

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Josef Zinnbauer has told iDiski Times why he wanted the reunite with his former Pirates assistant Fadlu Davids at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Davids, 41, himself had been promoted to become Pirates co-head coach alongside Mandla Ncikazi last season but left the club at the end of the campaign despite leading them into the CAF Confederations Cup final.

He has now again linked up with Zinnbauer and was unveiled as new assistant coach at Lokomotiv on Tuesday evening, with iDiski Times understanding he penned a deal until the end of the campaign.

Zinnbauer himself had already joined the club at the beginning of the campaign, when former Germany international Marvin Compper was working as the club’s assistant coach.

However, following a slow start to 2022/23 Compper was dismissed on 5 September, leading the club to hunt for a new assistant, with Zinnbauer now telling this publication why he was so keen to reunite with Davids.

“We’ve worked successfully together at Orlando Pirates and I needed a new assistant,” he told iDiski Times exclusively

“We were looking for one and Fadlu was the best choice because we were successful in South Africa at Pirates. We understand each other blindfolded.

“He thought about our offer, of course he is also at a stage where he wants to work as head coach, but I think he also appreciated working with me, he felt comfortable and I think that was the reason why he opted to say yes.

“Fadlu understands my philosophy and playing style and I’m hopeful we’ll work successfully together.”

Lokomotiv, who lost four out of the last five games in all competition, will have a chance to turn their downward spiral around when they face Khimki in the Russia Cup on Wednesday afternoon.
