Doc Slams Player For Bafana ‘Suicide’

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has criticised Veli Mothwa for trying to dribble when under pressure against Botswana on Tuesday.

Mothwa, 31, was given a rare start for Bafana but kept his 100% clean sheet record alive. The AmaZulu shot stopper has featured seven times for the national team overall but is yet to concede a goal.

However, there was a moment in the first half when Mothwa almost got caught out for trying to be too clever, which upset Khumalo, who was analysing the match for SABC Sport.

“A coach [Simphiwe] Dludlu, a coach Doctor, a coach Manqoba [Mngqithi] will understand Mothwa in this regard but a European like this, they don’t take any prisoners. This is suicidal,” he said.

“Hence that’s probably why the coach is upset. We can understand it but the reaction from our counterpart is different from us.

“Remember showboating to them it doesn’t exist at all. What I was saying [at half-time], players need to understand, when given a chance to represent, represent 100%, make use of the opportunity.

“You cannot afford to have a coach after the 90 minutes [who says] I’m disappointed in some of the players. We don’t want that and this guy is on a building phase.

“You when is the next competitive game? It’s in March, he doesn’t have ample time, the coach, there is a World Cup in between, PSL is in between, there is no time.

“Then you get these two friendly matches, you get an opportunity and then it’s wasted.”
