South African multi-award-winning singer, songwriter and performer Zoë Modiga returns with a reflective new single, When the Rain Comes, exploring adversity, renewal and the lessons that come with navigating life’s changing seasons.

The song offers a fresh perspective on life’s challenges, encouraging listeners to consider how difficult experiences can create opportunities for restoration, growth and transformation.

Drawing inspiration from the familiar 17th-century nursery rhyme Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another Day, Zoë transforms a childhood plea into a thoughtful reflection on adulthood and the unpredictable nature of life.

Zoë Modiga reimagines the meaning of rain

While the nursery rhyme portrays rain as an interruption to childhood play, Zoë uses it as a metaphor for life’s storms — the moments that unsettle, frighten and disrupt our plans.

Through When the Rain Comes, she explores the idea that difficult seasons are not always something to resist. Much like rain nourishes the earth, challenging experiences can create the conditions needed for personal growth and renewal.

“Much like life’s storms, though it can be frightening when it thunders and storms, it is also a source of restoration and life. Knowing that is a warmth within itself and I pray those who aren’t anchored in that, find it,” Zoë explains.

The song’s message centres on finding comfort in uncertainty and recognising that not every interruption is necessarily a setback.

Rather than focusing solely on the need to endure hardship, Zoë invites listeners to consider the unexpected lessons and possibilities that can emerge from difficult experiences.

A sound rooted in African musical expression

Sonically, When the Rain Comes reflects Zoë’s expansive approach to African music and her willingness to explore different musical influences.

Her artistic style draws from African indigenous sounds, soul, jazz, experimental music and alternative influences, creating a distinctive sound that balances contemporary expression with cultural grounding.

This musical approach has become a defining feature of her artistry, allowing her to explore identity, storytelling and the human experience through both sound and visual expression.

With each release, Zoë continues to challenge conventional boundaries while creating music that encourages listeners to engage with African stories and perspectives in fresh ways.

When the Rain Comes forms part of The Vault

The new single forms part of The Vault, Zoë’s latest body of work, which has already introduced listeners to tracks including Something New, Low and Did I Do My Thing.

The latter has received rotation on music video stations, further extending the project’s reach.

Through The Vault, Zoë continues to build a body of work shaped by intentionality, experimentation and a commitment to exploring different dimensions of her creative identity.

When the Rain Comes adds another reflective layer to the project, encouraging listeners to look beyond the immediate discomfort of difficult circumstances and consider what those experiences might make possible.

Zoë Modiga’s journey in music and storytelling

Born in Overport, Durban, and raised in eMbali 1 in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, Modiga has pursued music from an early age.

Her journey has developed into a multifaceted artistic practice that extends beyond music into fashion, storytelling and cultural expression. Across these creative spaces, she explores African identity, the complexities of the human experience and the possibilities of building immersive artistic worlds.

Classically jazz- and theatre-trained, Zoë is recognised for her dynamic performances, evocative visual language and distinctive approach to musical storytelling.

Her award-winning discography includes Yellow: The Novel (2017), Inganekwane (2020) and Nomthandazo (2024).

In 2023, she received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music, recognising her contribution to the country’s music landscape. She has also performed on major local and international stages, using her platform to advance African storytelling, cultural preservation and global creative representation.

Her highly anticipated fourth album is scheduled for release in 2026.

Finding restoration in life’s storms

With The Vault available now, Zoë continues to strengthen an artistic legacy rooted in cultural expression, experimentation and intentional storytelling.

When the Rain Comes offers a reminder that life does not always unfold according to plan. Although uncertainty and adversity can be uncomfortable, they can also bring opportunities for reflection, renewal and growth.

Through the single, Zoë encourages listeners to approach life’s changing seasons with a different perspective — recognising that even when storms arrive, something restorative may be taking place beneath the surface.
