Zimbabwe’s Songani punching above weight in the Iceland Premier League 

Iceland Premier League side Vestri has rewarded speedy Zimbabwean forward Silas Songani with a two-year contract extension following a sterling maiden season with the club.

The 33-year-old is punching above weight for the ambitious club having initially signed a one-year contract on arrival at the club back in May.

The former FC Sydvest forward joined Vestri after he was released from three-time Zimbabwean champions FC Platinum by former Chippa United gaffer Norman Mapeza.

However his flirtation with the Icelanders will now end in June 2024 amid hopes that more Zimbabweans will be lured to play for the club.

“This contract extension shows that I’m doing the right thing for the club. I came here after a brief stay at FC Platinum in Zimbabwe,” Songani said.

“It’s different here, you have to earn your place. I’m excited that I made it this far considering my age,”

The 2013 Zimbabwe Soccer Star of the Year runner up is hopeful that good representation will ultimately benefit budding players in Zimbabwe.

He revealed that his club intends to scout for budding players in Zimbabwe and that it will be influenced by the way all Zimbabweans plying their trade in Europe perform in terms of their abilities and discipline.

Songani is the second Zimbabwean to play for Vestri after central midfielder Kundai Benyu who left to join ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar in the same league.

“I’m also doing this for some of the talented youngsters who are playing in Zimbabwe like Panashe Mutimbanyoka and Oscar Bhebhe because the more I do well is the more these avenues are creates for the upcoming players to make it to Europe.

“They want to have good players from Zimbabwe, especially the young ones but it always requires a lot of dedication and hardwork to earn a place here,” he added.
