The Political Killings Task Team has arrested three senior municipal figures in the Western Cape over alleged corruption involving a security services contract.
The South African Police Service confirmed on Thursday that it arrested a mayor, municipal manager and chief financial officer in connection with the investigation. SAPS listed the arrests in an official media statement published on 1 October.
Police have not publicly identified the three accused in the statement or named the municipality, describing it only as being on the southern coast of the Western Cape.
Security contract at centre of investigation
According to SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the investigation centres on allegations involving a businessman who had been awarded a municipal security services contract.
Police allege the businessman was asked to pay kickbacks in exchange for the contract being allowed to continue.
Mathe said the businessman had allegedly already paid hundreds of thousands of rand because he feared his security contract would be terminated if he did not comply.
The allegations have not yet been tested in court.
Three face corruption charges
Police said all three arrested officials face corruption charges.
They are expected to appear in court on Monday, 5 October 2026.
No further details about the individual amounts allegedly paid, the value of the security contract or how long the alleged arrangement had been operating were provided in the police information available at the time of publication.
PKTT leads the investigation
The arrests were carried out by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, which is conducting the corruption investigation.
EWN reported that the case was triggered by information received by police about the alleged kickback arrangement.
The matter now moves to court, where the allegations against the three accused will be formally dealt with.
Until the case is concluded, the officials remain accused and have not been convicted of the charges against them.
