“I Want To Win A Cup,” Says Mosimane, Names His Bafana First Lineup
No feeling around. No coach-speak. Pitso Mosimane just said it straight.
He wants silverware. And he wants it badly. South Africa’s new Bafana Bafana boss has made his ambition crystal clear as he begins his second stint in charge. And the target is nothing short of Africa Cup of Nations glory, when Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda co-host the tournament next year.
But first, business. Bafana kick off life under Mosimane against a tricky Guinea side in their AFCON qualifying opener, set for Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday at 3pm.
Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Mosimane didn’t mince his words.
“It’s been too long, right, so we need a cup. I want to win a cup,” he declared.
He was, however, quick to clarify,:this isn’t empty talk.
“I’m not saying I’m going to win it, I want to win it. That’s why I’m here, and I think the players want to win the cup as well.”
For Mosimane, chasing anything less simply doesn’t make sense.
“So if we don’t try to win the cup, what are we trying to do? To qualify again?” he added.
“Of course you can’t win the cup if you don’t qualify. You know the levels and steps that we need to do to win the cup.”
Bold words from a coach who knows exactly what winning feels like. Now the real work begins.
“But ja, that’s the objective: to try and win a cup, maybe in five years, right?”
Five years or five months, one thing’s for sure. Mosimane didn’t come back to make up the numbers.
