The Hollywoodbets Super League returned with a bang from a two-week break due to Banyana Banyana and COSAFA Cup commitments.
The weekend fixtures saw Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies drop points against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) following a 1-all draw at Tuks Stadium.
UWC came into this game being the only team to take Maximum points off Banyana Ba Style in the first round of the season.
While the red-hot Brazilians have been on an impressive run, Thinasonke Mbuli’s side has also enjoyed a strong start to the campaign.
The Cape club have won 11 games this season and has only lost just twice, whereas Masandawana amassed 15 wins in 17 games.
Before the mouthwatering showdown, Downs Ladies head coach Jerry Tshabalala had warned his players of a schedule overload and demanded that they be “mentally strong” to be able to handle it.
“The next few weeks for us will be very demanding and we must be mentally ready for the daunting task. These tough games will help shape us ahead of the CAF Women’s Champions League. We are well rested and refreshed, thus, we have no excuses for the next few weeks. Champions are always ready to defend their badge no matter the circumstances,” said Kappa, as he is popularly known within the football cycles.
“After the clash against UWC, we will face Ma-Indies and TUT FC. These are games that will define our character and we are relishing the prospect of bolstering our title defence. These are not easy games by any means, but these are the matches that we live for. We are going to take them one step at a time and hope for the best.”
Meanwhile, we ended the weekend with action with a clash between title-chasing JVW and 13th-positioned City Lads which produced 10 goals. The Blue Diamonds thrashed City Lads 9-1 in an eventful 90 minutes, an encounter deemed to be the game of the weekend.
The victory saw Nompumelo Nyandeni becoming the first player to score 20 goals this season in the Super League after her hat-trick against City Lads on the day.
As things stand Sundowns remain top of the table with 46 points, just two points adrift from second-placed JVW.
