ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has congratulated the South African Students Congress (SASCO) on its reported victories in SRC elections at several universities across South Africa.
Mbalula took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday 23 September to congratulate SASCO during the current student election season.
“Decisive takeovers at the University of Venda, VUT, University of Limpopo, University of the Free State, University of Mpumalanga and tonight we hearing news that SASCO has won decisively at Wits and UNIZULU,” Mbalula said.
Unconfirmed reports state that at the University of Limpopo, preliminary results showed SASCO leading with 6,756 votes against the EFF Students Command’s 6,031 votes, from 14,897 votes counted.
Mbalula also claimed that SASCO had won decisively at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Zululand.
The results at Wits and UNIZULU had not been independently confirmed in Mbalula’s post, and the claims therefore attributed to him pending official results from the respective institutions.
Mbalula said the results showed continued support among young people for the Mass Democratic Movement.
“The youth still believe in the Mass Democratic Movement,” he said.
