Former Kaizer Chiefs head of scouting Walter Steenbok has been approved as the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Director (TD).

Steenbok, who is also a former Mamelodi Sundowns chief scout, is understood to have hugely impressed the independent company that was tasked by SAFA to conduct interviews on a transparent, as previously reported by iDiski Times newspaper senior journalist Velile Mnyandu.

On Saturday, SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe confirmed that the National Executive Committee “provisionally approved” Steenbok for the role.

“The last issue is the issue of the technical director. The technical committee has mad a recommendation to the NEC and provisionally approved – I’m saying provisionally because I must still meet with the incumbent, so we’ve agreed, not finalised – Walter Steenbok to be the technical director,” Mothlante said as per SABC.

SAFA had been without a permanent TD since the departure of former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey, following the expiry of his five-year contract in June last year, with head of coaching education Frans Mogashoa has been acting in this position since Tovey’s departure.

Other candidates believed to have done well during application process run by an independent panel, include current Mauritius Football Association (MFA) TD Zunaid Mall, who was also the technical advisor to the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) and a former SAFA technical officer in Gauteng Joe de Oliviera.

But Steenbok (49), who is also the former coach of Basotho Tigers (NFD) and Benoni Premier United is said to have top scored by a huge margin after giving an impressive presentation on the future of South African football to the independent panel, outlining key areas of critical importance, which included women’s football, grassroots and high performance programme and integration of sports science and modern coaching.
