Mamelodi Sundowns’ quest to make their mark on the international stage intensifies on Saturday afternoon when the African champions welcome Saudi Arabian giants Al Ahli to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
The highly anticipated clash, scheduled for 15:00, brings together the champions of Africa and Asia in a battle for a place in the next stage of FIFA’s global club competition.
For Sundowns, this is another opportunity to test themselves against one of the continent’s strongest clubs after lifting the CAF Champions League title last season.
The Brazilians secured their second CAF Champions League crown after beating AS FAR of Morocco 2-1 on aggregate, with the victory earning them a place in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Al Ahli, meanwhile, qualified as the reigning AFC Champions League Elite winners and booked their place against Sundowns after defeating Auckland FC 1-0 in the previous round. Substitute Saleh Abu Al Shamat scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute.
Saturday’s encounter is therefore a meeting between two continental champions, with the stakes extending far beyond domestic bragging rights.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has stressed that his team are not travelling through this competition simply to participate.
The Portuguese coach described the occasion as a major moment for the club and African football, saying Sundowns want to compete at the highest level rather than merely make up the numbers.
«“Obviously, we don’t want just to participate. We want to compete at the highest level we can. So it’s a good opportunity for us to push ourselves to the limit,” Cardoso said ahead of the encounter.»
Sundowns go into the match having enjoyed a strong start to their domestic campaign. They have also had to balance their Betway Premiership commitments with their continental and international assignments.
Their most recent league outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Chippa United, meaning Cardoso’s charges will be eager to return to winning ways when they face the Saudi Arabian giants.
Al Ahli, under new coach Marino Pusic, will provide a serious examination.
The Saudi side reached this stage after their narrow victory over Auckland and arrive with a squad containing considerable international experience. Pusic replaced Matthias Jaissle, who departed after guiding Al Ahli to continental success.
The Saudi giants will also be hoping their attacking quality can trouble a Sundowns defence that has been tested by a demanding schedule.
For Masandawana, however, home advantage could prove significant. Loftus Versfeld has become a familiar fortress for the Pretoria club, and the support of their home crowd will add another dimension to an already high-profile encounter.
The match also forms part of an exceptionally demanding season for Sundowns.
The Brazilians are juggling three major fronts — the Betway Premiership, CAF Champions League title defence and FIFA Intercontinental Cup — making squad management and consistency increasingly important.
Unlike a conventional two-legged continental tie, Saturday’s match is a single-match knockout encounter. There is therefore no second leg between Sundowns and Al Ahli.
FIFA’s format states that the winner of the Sundowns-Al Ahli encounter will claim the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup and progress to the next stage of the Intercontinental Cup.
The later stages will involve the winners of the FIFA Derby of the Americas and FIFA Challenger Cup, before the competition culminates in the final against European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
For Sundowns, though, all attention is firmly on Loftus.
The Brazilians have already conquered Africa. Now they have another opportunity to demonstrate how far they can go against the best from another continent.
