Ramaphosa Grants Madlanga Commission Extended Deadline

President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted yet another extension for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, pushing the deadline for its final report to 25 January 2027.

The Presidency confirmed the extension in a statement on Saturday morning saying the move is final and is meant to allow the Commission to wrap up its explosive work into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

The Commission, chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was initially given a tight deadline to uncover how criminal networks infiltrated law enforcement, how politicians allegedly interfered with prosecutions and investigations, and how corruption crippled the country’s justice system.

But as bombshell testimony continued to emerge, the scope of the rot proved far deeper than anticipated.

In Saturday’s statement, the Presidency said the new deadline will allow the Commission to process additional evidence, including testimony from various experts who have made recommendations relating to its terms of reference.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended – to Monday, 25 January 2027 – the deadline for the submission of the final report of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System,” the statement read.

“The new deadline allows the Commission to process additional evidence, including the testimony of various experts who have made recommendations relating to the Commission’s terms of reference.”

The Presidency added that Ramaphosa “once again expresses his deepest appreciation for the work conducted by Commission as well as for the manner in which law enforcement agencies are following up testimony emerging from Commission hearings.”

The extension is not unexpected.

For months, the Madlanga Commission has heard gut-wrenching evidence from whistleblowers, senior police officers, prosecutors and crime intelligence operatives who detailed alleged capture of key institutions, political shielding of criminal syndicates, and the deliberate sabotage of high-profile cases.

The Commission has already become a political lightning rod, with opposition parties demanding that its findings lead to prosecutions, while some within the ruling alliance have questioned its cost and duration.

Ramaphosa established the Commission as part of his broader promise to clean up the criminal justice system after years of state capture and institutional decay.

Its mandate includes investigating whether criminal syndicates have infiltrated SAPS, the NPA and intelligence structures, and whether political actors have interfered to protect allies or target opponents.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks and the NPA’s Investigating Directorate, are already said to be acting on testimony emerging from the hearings, opening new dockets and re-examining stalled cases.

However, the repeated extensions have raised concerns about whether the Commission will ever conclude its work and whether its final report will have real teeth.

Critics argue that commissions of inquiry in South Africa have become a costly exercise in truth-telling without accountability, with landmark reports like the Zondo Commission still awaiting full implementation.
