Mascara mistakes you might be making without noticing

Mascara is one of the quickest ways to define your eyes, but small mistakes in how you apply, store or replace it can leave your lashes looking clumpy, smudged or less dramatic than intended.

Here are some common mascara mistakes you might be making without realising it.

Pumping the wand

Repeatedly pumping the mascara wand in and out of the tube may seem like a good way to pick up more product.

However, according to Clicks, it can push air into the tube, causing the mascara to dry out faster. Instead, gently twist the wand inside the tube before pulling it out.

Applying too many coats

According to Aleph Beauty, more mascara does not always mean better lashes. Layering several coats after the product has started drying can create clumps and make lashes look heavy. For a more natural finish, apply one or two even coats, allowing each layer to settle slightly.

Using old mascara

L’Oreal Paris states that one of the biggest mistakes is thinking mascara doesn’t really expire. Mascara actually has a relatively short lifespan because the wand repeatedly comes into contact with your eyes and surrounding skin.

Replace it according to the manufacturer’s guidance, and sooner if the formula changes in smell, texture or performance. Never share mascara, as this can increase the risk of spreading eye infections.

Skipping the roots

Applying mascara only to the lash tips can make lashes appear shorter. Position the wand close to the roots and gently wiggle it upwards, taking care not to poke the eye.

Sleeping in mascara

Even if you’re exhausted after a long day, remove your eye makeup before bed. Leaving mascara on overnight can contribute to irritation and can make lashes feel dry or brittle.

A few simple changes to your mascara routine can help you achieve cleaner, more defined lashes while keeping eye hygiene in check.
