Highbury FC will be looking to bounce back immediately when they return to Motsepe Foundation Championship action against Gomora United on Friday after suffering their first defeat of the new campaign at the hands of early pacesetters Magesi FC.
Highbury’s impressive start to the season was halted on Sunday when Magesi secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Madibaz Stadium, with Naeem Amoojee scoring the decisive goal. The result handed Highbury their first defeat after three victories from their opening four matches.
The loss also saw Highbury surrender their position near the top of the table. Going into the weekend, Magesi lead the Championship with 12 points from four matches, while Highbury have nine points, with Real Native FC also on nine points but occupying second place. Gomora are eighth on seven points.
Highbury’s meeting with Gomora at Nelson Mandela University Stadium on Friday, September 18 therefore carries significant importance for the Eastern Cape side.
A victory would take Highbury to 12 points and keep them within touching distance of Magesi, while also putting pressure on Real Native depending on the outcome of their match against Venda FC.
A draw would move Highbury to 10 points, while another defeat would leave them on nine and potentially allow several teams below them to close the gap.
Gomora, meanwhile, will arrive with confidence after winning their last two matches. They defeated Venda FC 1-0 before recording another 1-0 victory over The Bees.
The Alexandra-based club currently have seven points from four matches and could move into the upper reaches of the table with another positive result.
The weekend’s biggest storyline, however, will be whether Magesi can maintain their perfect start.
The Limpopo outfit, who have won all four of their matches so far, return to action on Sunday when they host Hungry Lions FC. Magesi have scored six goals and conceded only one in their opening four matches.
With Highbury and Magesi separated by only three points, the result at the Peter Mokaba Stadium could have a direct bearing on the early title race.
The fixtures are confirmed for the fifth round of the 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship.
For Highbury, Friday’s encounter is about more than simply recovering from a defeat. With the leading pack tightly grouped behind Magesi, another three points could immediately restore their momentum and keep them firmly among the early promotion contenders.
Meanwhile, Magesi will know that maintaining their winning run would strengthen their position at the summit, while results involving Real Native, Cape Town City, Lerumo Lions, Leicesterford City and Upington City could further reshape the early table.
