Working with older employees: 7 tips for a better workplace

Working with someone from a different generation can sometimes take getting used to, but it can also be a valuable opportunity to learn.

People are staying in the workforce for longer, while some retirees are also returning to work. As a result, many workplaces now bring together employees at very different stages of their careers, says Face2Face Recruitment.

For younger employees, working alongside an older colleague can offer access to years of professional experience and practical knowledge. The key is approaching the relationship without making assumptions.

Don’t judge someone by their age

Age does not determine how capable someone is.

Assuming an older employee is out of touch or can’t keep up can create unnecessary tension and prevent you from recognising the skills they bring to the workplace.

They may have dealt with situations you are experiencing for the first time, giving them a different perspective on how to handle challenges.

Keep an open mind

Not everyone works or communicates in the same way.

Being flexible when working with colleagues from different generations can make collaboration easier. You may have different approaches, but that does not mean one is automatically better than the other.

Face2Face Recruitment suggests that you take the time to understand how your colleague works instead of immediately dismissing something because it feels unfamiliar.

Don’t feel threatened by experience

Having a colleague with considerably more experience can sometimes be intimidating, particularly when you are still establishing yourself professionally.

However, becoming defensive or disrespectful will only make the working relationship more difficult.

Instead, ask questions and have conversations. You may find that understanding their perspective makes the experience far less uncomfortable.

Learn from each other

Learning should not be a one-way street.

Older employees can offer knowledge built through years of professional experience, while younger workers may bring skills and familiarity with newer technology, states Face2Face Recruitment.

Don’t be afraid to ask an experienced colleague for advice, but also be willing to share what you know.

Focus on the bigger picture

A strong workplace depends on people being able to work together, regardless of age. Being able to collaborate with colleagues from different generations is ultimately about contributing to the same goals.

Rather than concentrating on the age difference, look at what each person brings to the team.

Respect goes both ways

A multigenerational workplace works best when employees recognise that everyone has something to contribute. Older colleagues can share experience and knowledge, while younger employees can introduce fresh ideas and new skills.

The best approach is simple: listen, learn, share and remain open-minded. Your next valuable workplace lesson could come from someone whose career started long before yours.
