Whether you’re heading to the gym, walking around the city or simply looking for an everyday pair, choosing the right sneakers is about more than style. The right fit can make your shoes more comfortable and better suited to how you move.

Start with the fit

According to Studio 88, fit should be a priority. Your toes should have enough room to move without your foot sliding around inside the shoe, while the heel should feel secure.

For running shoes, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends getting your feet measured when shopping and cautions against choosing footwear based solely on arch height or how your feet look while walking.

Match sneakers to your activity

Not all sneakers are designed for the same purpose. Running shoes are built for repetitive forward movement, while training shoes are generally better suited to gym workouts involving lateral movement and strength exercises. For everyday wear, prioritise comfort, durability and versatility.

Think about where and how often you’ll wear them before buying. A stylish sneaker that doesn’t suit your routine may spend more time in your cupboard than on your feet.

Consider cushioning and support

Cushioning is a personal preference and should complement your activity and comfort needs. More cushioning isn’t automatically better, and not everyone needs a highly supportive shoe. Research also suggests that people respond differently to footwear.

Don’t ignore quality

According to Verywell Fit, comfort is an important factor worth considering. Look for breathable materials, a secure upper, comfortable cushioning and a durable outsole. Most importantly, walk around in the shoes before buying them. If they pinch, rub or feel uncomfortable in the shop, they’re unlikely to become more comfortable with regular wear.
