The Motsepe Foundation Championship promotion race will provide an early taste of high-stakes football this weekend when the top two sides, Magesi FC and Highbury, meet in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash.
The two clubs have made perfect starts to the 2026/27 campaign, winning all three of their opening matches and collecting nine points apiece.
Magesi currently occupy top spot on goal difference, having scored five goals and conceded only one, while Highbury have scored four and also conceded one.
The sides will meet at Nelson Mandela University Stadium in Gqeberha on Sunday, September 13, at 15:00, with the winner guaranteed to strengthen its position at the summit.
For Magesi, the encounter represents another important step in their mission to return to the Betway Premiership after dropping into the second tier.
Dikwena tša Meetse have been flawless so far, opening their campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Midlands Wanderers before beating The Bees 1-0 and then producing their most impressive result of the campaign to date — a 3-1 away win over Leicesterford City.
Highbury, meanwhile, have also demonstrated the ability to grind out results.
They began with a 2-1 victory away to The Bees before edging Hope FC 1-0 and then recording another narrow 1-0 victory over Upington City last weekend.
That means Sunday’s contest will pit Magesi’s attacking efficiency against a Highbury side that has proved difficult to break down.
Magesi chasing another statement
Magesi coach Kabelo Sibiya will be hoping his charges can maintain their winning momentum and return home from the Eastern Cape with another three points.
The Limpopo outfit has conceded just once in three matches, while its five goals have been enough to keep them at the top of the standings.
The 3-1 victory against Leicesterford was particularly significant because it showed that Magesi can produce away from home — something they will need again against Highbury.
The challenge, however, will be considerably tougher this time.
Highbury have also conceded just once in three matches and will have home conditions on their side.
Highbury eye fourth straight win
Highbury will enter the match knowing that another victory would give them a fourth consecutive league win and potentially create an early gap between themselves and the chasing pack.
Their three victories have all come by narrow margins, suggesting that the side is comfortable operating in tight matches.
A victory would also hand Highbury the psychological advantage of beating their closest rivals while simultaneously taking control of the championship race.
But there is very little separating the two sides, and a draw would allow both clubs to remain unbeaten while opening the door for the teams immediately behind them.
Lerumo Lions ready to pounce
While all eyes will be on Gqeberha, Lerumo Lions will be hoping to take advantage of any slip-up by the leading pair when they host Real Native on Saturday.
Lerumo are third on seven points after three matches.
They opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Venda before beating North West University 2-0 and then overcoming Orbit College 2-1 on Tuesday.
Real Native, formerly known as Casric Stars, are also among the early promotion contenders, sitting on six points.
A victory for Lerumo would take them to 10 points and put pressure on either Magesi or Highbury to maintain their perfect record.
Real Native, meanwhile, will be looking to recover from their recent 1-0 defeat to Midlands Wanderers.
Gomora hoping to stay in the hunt
Gomora United are another side with genuine ambitions of remaining in the promotion conversation.
They are also on seven points after three matches, having drawn 2-2 against Hungry Lions before beating Venda 1-0 and The Bees 1-0.
Gomora face Leicesterford City at Malamulele Stadium on Saturday.
A win would take Gomora to 10 points and put them in an excellent position to benefit if either Magesi or Highbury drops points.
Leicesterford, however, will be desperate for a response after losing 3-1 to Magesi in their previous match. They have four points from their opening three matches.
Cape Town City face tricky away test
Newly promoted Hope FC will welcome Cape Town City on Sunday in another interesting encounter.
Hope have made a promising start to life in the Championship and currently sit sixth, while Cape Town City are seventh after finally registering their first victory last weekend, a 2-1 success over Hungry Lions.
Cape Town City will be hoping to build on that result, but Hope will fancy their chances at home after already collecting two wins in their opening three matches.
The Bees desperate for first points
At the bottom end of the standings, The Bees face another difficult afternoon when they travel to Hungry Lions.
The Bees have lost all three of their opening matches — against Highbury, Magesi and Gomora — and will be desperate to get their campaign moving.
Hungry Lions are also still searching for their first victory. They opened with draws against Gomora and Orbit College before losing 2-1 to Cape Town City.
That makes Saturday’s clash particularly important for both clubs.
Other matches
The remaining Saturday fixtures see Venda FC host Upington City, while Midlands Wanderers welcome North West University and University of Pretoria entertain Orbit College.
With only three rounds completed, the table remains extremely tight, but the weekend could begin to establish which clubs have genuine promotion ambitions and which will be fighting simply to stay in touch.
The biggest prize, however, remains at Nelson Mandela University Stadium.
Magesi and Highbury have both won three from three. By Sunday afternoon, one of those perfect records will almost certainly be gone — and the consequences could be significant in what is already shaping up to be a fascinating promotion race.
