Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has sparked speculation about a possible collaboration with airline Airlink after the carrier’s dramatic flyover at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.

The minister took to social media with a cryptic post appearing to hint at plans involving Airlink, just days after two of the airline’s jets thrilled Springboks supporters with a spectacular pre-match flypast.
The flyover took place ahead of the Springboks’ Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Test against New Zealand at DHL Stadium on 29 August 2026. The two aircraft, one in Springbok colours and the other in All Blacks colours, flew in formation over the stadium shortly before kick-off.
According to flight-tracking data analysed by Flightradar24, the lead aircraft passed an estimated 41 to 46 feet (12.5 to 14 metres) above the stadium roof. The dramatic footage quickly went viral, with fans praising the pilots while others questioned the safety of the manoeuvre.
Airlink defends dramatic flyover
The spectacle also attracted international attention, with aviation commentators debating whether the flypast was too low.
Airlink, however, maintained that the operation was carefully planned and rehearsed. The airline said the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) provided guidance, approval and support for the flight.
The airline also said the aircraft were operated by highly experienced crews and that flight data confirmed the flypast was conducted within the approved altitude and speed parameters.
The dramatic display was also praised by Gayton, who previously described it as spectacular and highlighted the skill of South African pilots.

Now, the minister appears to have reignited interest in the flyover with his latest social media post.
His cryptic teaser has left followers wondering whether a collaboration between his department and Airlink could be on the cards.

Others have responded with jokes and creative suggestions, including offers from artists who would like to design aircraft liveries.
There has also been some scepticism, with critics questioning whether politicians should become involved in viral moments that have already attracted controversy.
