SAPS Fires Suspended Crime Intelligence Boss Major General Feroz Khan

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially confirmed the dismissal of suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Feroz Khan from the police service.

National SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed on Wednesday that Khan was deemed dismissed in terms of Regulation 9(7)(b) of the SAPS Discipline Regulations.

The decision followed his failure to appear before a designated senior officer overseeing an expedited disciplinary hearing.
“SAPS reiterates its commitment to accountability, discipline and professional conduct within the organisation,” Mathe stated.

“No member, regardless of rank or position, is above the law or the applicable disciplinary framework.”

Because the matter has been the subject of prior legal battles, SAPS maintained it would continue to respect the courts and provide updates where legally permissible.

The dismissal comes immediately after a significant legal defeat for Khan in court. Represented by the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU), Khan had filed an urgent application at the Labour Court to halt the disciplinary proceedings in his absence.

However, Judge Connie Prinsloo struck the application off the roll due to a lack of urgency and jurisdiction, ordering POPCRU to pay the legal costs.

SAPS invoked Regulation 9(7) after Khan repeatedly failed to attend hearings, which allows for a deemed discharge if an officer fails to appear.

Khan remains wrapped in deep controversy and faces legal pressure across multiple fronts:Khan is considered a central figure in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry investigating corruption, illicit procurement networks, and political interference within the criminal justice system.

Electronic devices seized from him allegedly place him at the center of procurement manipulation and leaking confidential data.

On 28 June, just days before he was originally scheduled to testify before the commission, Khan survived an ambush in Houghton, Johannesburg, where he was shot multiple times. He was recently readmitted to a medical facility following complications from his recovery.

At the Madlanga Commission this week, evidence leaders pushed back against Khan’s latest delay tactics.

Documents emerged indicating his medical certificates may have been illegally backdated by a psychiatrist at the request of Khan’s son.

His commission testimony has since been postponed to 28 September, contingent on an independent medical evaluation.

Separate from his internal disciplinary ouster, Khan was arrested alongside Gauteng Hawks head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa on criminal charges involving an illicit gold syndicate, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.

He has also been linked to a massive R300-million cocaine seizure in Aeroton.
Anti-crime advocates have welcomed the police service’s swift action.

Broadcaster and activist Ian Cameron publicly lauded the dismissal, stating that accountability “cannot be litigated away” and that outstanding criminal proceedings must now run their course.
