Tembisa Hospital fraud suspect Stefan Joel Govindraju has been granted bail of R200,000 after appearing in the Gauteng Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.
Govindraju was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday after returning from a trip abroad.
He faces charges linked to an alleged procurement syndicate accused of siphoning hundreds of millions of rand from Tembisa Hospital.
State does not oppose bail
Govindraju appeared briefly in court on Monday morning.
The State did not oppose his bail application, saying he had been cooperating with officials and that the court was holding his travel documents.
The court subsequently granted him bail of R200,000.
Govindraju is expected to return to court on 29 September.
He faces charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering linked to procurement at the Gauteng hospital.
R600m allegedly siphoned from hospital
The case forms part of wider investigations into alleged irregular procurement at Tembisa Hospital.
The Special Investigating Unit revealed last year that investigators had identified three main syndicates linked to the hospital’s multimillion-rand procurement network.
According to investigators, Govindraju was a director of at least 70 entities, while businesses linked to him received tenders from the hospital.
The syndicate he is allegedly connected to is accused of siphoning about R600 million through the procurement system.
The allegations against Govindraju have not yet been tested in court.
Procurement network under investigation
The investigation into Tembisa Hospital has focused on allegations that groups of companies were used to benefit from irregular procurement.
Govindraju’s arrest adds another court case to the broader probe into the hospital’s finances and contracting processes.
His cooperation with investigators and the surrender of his travel documents were cited by the State when it chose not to oppose bail.
He remains an accused person and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The matter will return to court on 29 September as proceedings relating to the fraud, corruption and money-laundering allegations continue.
