A live broadcast from the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre has sparked debate among Morning Live viewers, with some questioning whether the programme placed too much emphasis on the experiences of offenders while giving insufficient attention to victims and their families.

The SABC programme went behind the prison walls as part of a feature highlighting the lives of women serving sentences and the rehabilitation programmes available to them.
Among those interviewed were Idah Lebaka, who is serving a sentence for murder, and Connie van Nieuwkerk, who was sentenced to 10 years for fraud. The SABC’s Morning Live social media account promoted interviews with both women as part of its coverage of incarcerated female offenders.

Inside the lives of female inmates
The segment explored what life is like for women behind bars, including their daily routines, reflections on their crimes and the rehabilitation programmes available inside correctional facilities.
The focus was also on the possibility of rehabilitation and preparing offenders to return to society after serving their sentences.
The Department of Correctional Services has previously explained that rehabilitation programmes are intended to help offenders become functional members of society and support their reintegration once they complete their sentences.
The broadcast formed part of broader efforts to draw attention to women in correctional facilities and the challenges they face.

Viewers question the focus
While the segment aimed to provide insight into rehabilitation and the experiences of incarcerated women, some viewers were uncomfortable with the decision to give convicted offenders a prominent platform.
Critics questioned whether discussions about inmates’ regrets and daily lives risked overshadowing the people affected by their crimes.
Some viewers asked why the programme did not give similar attention to victims and victims’ families, particularly where the crimes involved serious violence or significant financial losses.
The debate also raised questions about how broadcasters should balance empathy, rehabilitation and accountability when telling the stories of people serving prison sentences.
