Somizi Mhlongo is one of the most famous entertainers in South Africa whose name is known and his work is appreciated beyond the borders of Mzansi.
While most details of Somizi’s life are often laid out in the air it appears that the gifted choreographer can keep a secret, one such secret being the existence of his sister.
Here is everything you didn’t know about Somizi Mhlongo’s sister, his famous parents, as well as his daughter who is taking after him.
Who was Somizi Mhlongo’s sister?
Somizi Mhlongo’s sister was the late Joyce Twala. Unlike Somizi, a popular personality both in South Africa and abroad, Somizi Mhlongo’s sister was very private, and most people only came to know about her after she passed on.
Somizi’s sister- Joyce Twala passed on in October 2021, Somizi and the family did not reveal the cause of her demise. A week after his older sister was laid to rest, Somizi took to Instagram to break the news that they had laid his sister to rest the week before.
“Last Friday we bid farewell to my mom’s first born….my sister. She was a very private person and her wish was that her send-off should be just that. And we made sure that we grant her that. It was a peaceful dignified send-off.” wrote Somizi.
He also went to thank all the service providers who had come through to make his sister’s send-off a success.
Somizi Mhlongo’s sister is survived by a daughter called Phumzile and reportedly three great-grandchildren- Lwanz, Lenhle, and Lesedi. This is according to the eulogy of Somizi Mhlongo’s mother- Mary Twala.
Somizi Mhlongo’s parents and background
Somizi Buyani Mhlongo was born in December 1972 to parents who were well-established in the entertainment industry.
His late father was a renowned actor, choreographer, and comedian- Ndaba Mhlongo. He died on the 29th of October 1989 at the age of 56 years.

Somizi’s mother was the late Mary Kuksie Twala. She was an award-winning veteran actress who appeared in multiple local and international productions. Twala passed on in July 2020 at the ripe age of 80 at the Parklane private hospital, Johannesburg, and was laid to rest in Soweto.
Besides his sister, Somizi also had another sibling- an older brother called Archie who unfortunately died in 1985 after being stabbed.
Having been brought up in a very talented and creative family, Somizi’s passion for acting began at an early age and the gifted actor and choreographer dropped out of school to pursue his career.
At the age of 13 years, Somizi Mhlongo landed his first acting role in the 1987 film Scavengers. He went on to appear in several other films and shows in the next years and nearly three decades later, he is one of the most renowned entertainers in South Africa and the entire continent.
Somizi’s daughter
Like his late sister, Somizi also has one daughter- a beautiful young lady called Bahumi Madisakwane Mhlongo who was born to Somizi and his ex-girlfriend- Palesa Madisakwane.
Batumi holds a degree in film production and directing from the AFDA. She has also established herself as an actress and has appeared in several films including ET Africa’s Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story.
