‘Khune Is One Of The Best On The Continent’

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika has hailed captain Itumeleng Khune as one of the best in Africa and detailed the differences between the keeping options at the club.

Chiefs started the season with academy product Bruce Bvuma in goals before Brandon Petersen was also given a chance for three games. Khune was then offered a chance with a sterling performance in the MTN8 quarter-final win over Stellenbosch.

With head coach Arthur Zwane holding three South Africa international goalkeepers at his disposal, there’s a headache upcoming over who becomes the outright number one, although each of them has noted there’s major competition and each are fighting for their chance.

Kwinika has now featured in defence with all three keepers this season and he said playing with Khune was a unique experience as someone who watched him in the first-team from his time in the academy but backs all the stoppers available as quality options who they need to understand brings different qualities to the fore.

“When you speak about Itu, you speaking about one of the best in the country and the continent, he seen it all, he has the experience,” Kwinika said.

“It’s one of those things, that any day, I can play with Bruce, he’s my brother I can do anything to save him, same with Itu, it’s just about who’s behind me.

“None of the keepers are the same, each one prefers doing things their own way – you need to understand how the other one is. Brandon is more of a ball player and Itu when he has the ball, [he] wants things to be quick and the distribution.

“It’s about trying to understand and knowing who’s behind you but at any given day, whoever is behind us, our job is just to defend and protect him and help the team to get results.”

Chiefs return to DStv Premiership action today against AmaZulu this afternoon at FNB Stadium (17h30).
