The South African Football Association (SAFA) is mourning the death of former Bafana Bafana team manager Sipho “Fistoz” Nkumane, who passed away at the age of 56.

Nkumane died in hospital in Sebokeng on Sunday, 16 August, according to his brother, Fistoz Nkumane.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his brother said the family had been left devastated by the loss.

“He passed away in hospital in Sebokeng a few days ago. The family is devastated,” he said.

Nkumane leaves behind three children.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, 20 August, while his funeral is scheduled for Saturday, 22 August.

SAFA pays tribute

SAFA president Danny Jordaan described Nkumane’s death as a major loss to his family, the football association and South African football as a whole.

“Our sincere condolences to his family and we grieve his passing. May his soul rest in peace,” Jordaan said.

Nkumane made his mark on South African football through his involvement in various areas of the game, including his role as Bafana Bafana team manager.

His work with the national team placed him at the heart of South African football during an important period in the development of the senior men’s national side.

SAFA said his contribution to the game would be remembered as the football community mourns his passing.

The association extended its condolences to Nkumane’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
