Morocco have appointed former Wydad AC coach, Walid Regragui as their new head coach after sacking Vahid Halilhodžić earlier this month.
The Bosnian coach was recently sacked as Morocco coach, despite leading the country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He was in charge of the Atlas Lions for three years, winning 20 games – including a recent 2-1 come-back win over South Africa, drawing seven and losing just three.
However, his playing style had often been criticised and pressure mounted after Morocco was dumped out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations by Egypt in the quarter-final.
Al Ahly have reportedly offered Halilhodžić to take over from next season, but the 69-year-old is yet to respond.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Morocco finally announced Regragui as Halilhodzic’s successor after he himself had parted ways with Wydad after beating Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League final and also winning the Moroccan Botola Pro League.
The former Morocco international began his coaching career as assistant of the Atlas Lions in September 2012. However, when then head coach Rachid Taoussi was sacked on 1 October 2013, Regragui’s contract was also terminated.
Morocco, who are in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON qualification group, next face Chile in a friendly on 23 September.
